My name
is Gillian Lee, I am currently in my third year of studying Fashion Design (BA
Honours Degree) at Limerick School of Art and Design, Limerick Institute
of Technology, Ireland. Recently the Limerick School of Art and Design’s
Fashion Department has been ranked as one of the top 50 fashion colleges
worldwide. LSAD, Limerick School of Art and Design is the only college in
Ireland to be included among colleges in Paris, London and New York.
This year through the
intense course structure, I will have the opportunity to gain an insight into
my own individual creative direction and specific areas of interest to me
through the numerous projects that will help me discover and develop my
aesthetic as a designer. These projects will cover a variety of areas and will
consist of fashion design, illustration, presentation both visually and
verbally, pattern drafting, grading pattern cutting, knitwear construction and
garment construction. Successful Completion of these projects will further
assist my transition into the fashion industry.
In April 2015, I will be partaking in a 3 month work placement. This internship will give me the opportunity to gain real industry experience and a direct insight into the daily workings of a designer/fashion label. I will apply for an internship with a designer I admire and believe I can learn from. As a designer myself I am very interested in both hand and machine knitting techniques and the combination of both fine and chunky gauge to create more voluminous and structured knits. I have a hugh interest in texture and fabric manipulation techniques, alongside this I am also interested in the construction of patterns and garments. I am draw to sources of inspiration which give me sculptural forms, clean lines and an innovative cut. I admire designers such as Derek Lawlor for his innovative techniques and willingness to push the boundaries of traditional knitwear, Georgia Hardinge for her innovative use of pleats and architectural silhouettes and Stine Ladefoged for her experimentation and inventiveness in knitwear.
I am fortunate to have got a previous work placement with Knitwear designer Honor Fitzsimons in Dublin. I spent four months working on her A/W collection for the Brown Thomas Irish designers create show. A celebration of Irish designer innovation and imagination. One of Irelands most prestigious annual events where Irish designers get a platform to sell their work in one of Ireland’s most luxurious department stores. Brown Thomas. I was involved in all aspects of her collection, extending my knowledge of design and production and in particular gaining a much greater understanding of the marketing and PR side to the fashion industry.
Early Last year I showcased my work at the “ Handarbeit”. Austermann is the hand knitting yarn section of the industrially renowned German “ Schoeller sussen GmbH” yarn spinny company. This company exhibits annually at the international trade fair called “Handarbeit” in COLOGNE, Germany. As part of a team, I designed and created one of the six showpiece collections at the “ Schoeller, Austermann” stand on March 22/23/24th 2014.This garment was also featured In their fashion show.
In September 2014, I showcased my work in the exhibition Stitches in time. Stitches in time is a collaborative project between the National museum of Ireland decorative arts and History and Limerick school of Art and Design, Limerick institute of technology (LSAD- LIT). I designed and produced one of the 12 Garments chosen from a group of 25, to be exhibited. My main source of inspiration came from the fashion and artefacts inspired by the soldiers and chiefs exhibition. The exhibition was then showcased in the Hunt Museum Limerick.
I hope you enjoy looking at my portfolio of work both design and construction. I will continue to update it as I progress through this year.
Thank You,
Gillian Lee
